As an institution that accommodated people from all walks of life, the public hospital is a stage of the great human theatre called “life”. In this workshop, participants were brought down the memory lane back in time to learn about the history of Malaysia’s oldest teaching hospital through a series of guided activities. The paintings of the remarkable Yu Chian and the story behind these paintings were explored, focusing on the multi-cultural interactions underlying Malaysia’s unique ecology of caring for the sick. A facilitated story- telling session using the creativity, words, visual forms and thought processes of the participants own were conducted.
By approaching history in a creative manner, we hope to foster a space for open conversation amongst healthcare professionals of the future, interested to bridge the gaps and lessons in empathy from the past with the present-day challenges of working in the public health sector.
